Early Years

Early Years 2018-2019

We have:

*Three Pre-School Classes: BEES, DUCKLINGS and CATERPILLAR.

*Five Reception Classes: PENGUIN, DOLPHIN, BUTTERFLY, PANDA and TIGER

School Timings:

Arrival times

Lessons begin promptly at 7:15 am and end at 12:30 pm every day. It is very important that your child be on time so he/she will not miss our Morning Routines and General Instructions for the day. Your child’s progress is greatly influenced by their ability to participate in their daily routines and activities so please remember that an early “bed time” routine is vital so your child will be awake and active during the whole class day. Children must be collected on time every day.

Waiting Area:

Do not drop your child at the gate. Your child should be accompanied to the waiting area, which is available from 6:30 to 7:15 or the class room (after 7:00 a.m.).

Dismissal times

  • The school day ends at 12:30.
  • Please do not dismiss your child early on a regular basis. You should only dismiss early for family emergencies and medical appointments.

Communication

We will be using our “Communication Book” as a means of communicating between parents and teachers. It is very important that your child brings this book home and back to school each day. Our Class Schedule is attached inside the “Communication Book” to inform you about classes for each day and weekly newsletters.

If you have any inquiries, suggestions or new information regarding your child, you can inform the teacher through our “Communication Book”. This will be the best communication tool between family and school. Parents may write messages in either English or Arabic.

  • Please, do not forget to check regularly our “Parent Notice Board” which will be placed outside each classroom. We will post any new information or notices to keep you updated.

Parent Involvement

  • Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school!
  • We are always happy to have your help for special activities in the classroom.
  • We will try to let you know at least a week ahead of time if we need help.
  • Requests for help will be published in our newsletter. We hope that you can come and join in the fun!

Appointment:

Should you wish to discuss your child’s progress or you wish to meet with the teacher, please organise a time through the school office.

Snack Times

  • In Early Years, we will have 2 Snack Times during the day. We highly recommend that students bring nutritious meals from home which could include fruit, vegetables, yoghurt, juice, water, sandwiches, bread and cheese.
  • School Cafeteria: Your child may purchase healthy snacks, juice, yoghurt, water and healthy biscuits from the school cafeteria with reasonable prices.
  • The school has a “Healthy Eating Policy” so fizzy drinks, sweets, chocolates, chips or fast foods such as McDonalds or KFC meals are not allowed. Also, eggs are not allowed in the school.
  • Keep in mind that OXFORD ENGLISH SCHOOL is a NUT FREE SCHOOL which means that your child should not be sent with any snacks or meals which contain any nuts or nut products. If your child is sent to school with any of these prohibited items, the food will be sent back home at the end of the day.

School Uniform

  • Students are required to wear the school uniform every day and the P.E. kit on the days they have P.E. For the safety of our students, high heels, sandals will not be allowed. Students are encouraged to wear black shoes if available.

Absences/ Attendance

  • Should your child be away from school, please inform us in their Communication Book in either Arabic or English. The School Office must be informed of any days taken as extra holidays.
  • Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is CRUCIAL for his/her success. Most learning activities are group-oriented and involve interaction with classmates. Therefore, it is next to impossible to make up work at home. Please view school as priority, and see to it that our child attends every day except in cases of illness or emergency.

Discipline: Behaviour plan

  • Behaviour policies are implemented in this school to handle behavioral infractions and support positive discipline for the students.
  • We have behaviour charts in our classrooms using a method of ‘spotlighting’ good behavior. Students with good behaviour are with small gifts from the school and a Spotlight Certificate.
  • Photographs of the Spotlight winners are displayed in the Administration office.

 Hands on Learning

  • We feel that the best way to help students learn, is to make learning fun.
  • Important concepts can be learned by doing meaningful hands-on activities.
  • There are times when seatwork is required and necessary, but for the most part, our classroom will be an active learning environment.

Newsletter

  • Look for a weekly newsletter at the beginning of each week in your child’s Communication file.
  • All important announcements will be placed in the Communication file. Please post them in a safe place for daily reference.

Practise work only for Reception (Homework)

  • Your child will receive practice work on Sundays for the week and it will be placed in their Communication file.
  • Your child should complete this work by him or herself, under your supervision, and return on Wednesdays!
  • Completing and returning practice work helps build a sense of responsibility and prepares him for the homework he will have to complete later in his/her school years.
  • The practise work should be your child’s best work.
  • Returning neatly completed work ON TIME.

Assessment and Report Cards

  • Assessment will be done monthly.
  • Report cards are issued every term.
  • These reports reflect the progress your child has made toward various objectives and uses a grading system that reflects the developmental nature of Early years learning.

Recess

  • The students will play outdoors for 35 minutes after lunch each day (unless it is raining ). Please keep this in mind when helping your child to select clothing for the day.
  • In the cooler months, always send your child in with a jacket/coat. Please mark clothing clearly with your child’s name

Literacy Centres

  • During literacy centers, the students will practice skills while the teacher works with individual students or in small guided groups.
  • The center activities are designed to strengthen letter/sound knowledge, listening skills, oral language expression, rhyme, letter formation and cooperation.

Writing

  • Our writing program builds on what each child already knows. Writing begins with scribbles and proceeds to lines and circles, random strings of letters, words and spaces and eventually sentences.
  • The students will be encouraged and praised for all attempts and accomplishments in writing.
  • Providing a risk-free environment is paramount to your child’s progress in writing.
  • If possible, please provide your child with writing tools, such as pencils, crayons, markers and paper at home.

Mathematics

  • The mathematics curriculum provides students with mathematical experiences that help them develop number sense and a positive attitude towards mathematics that will continue through their school career and their lives.
  • We employ a hands-on, problem solving approach.

Knowledge and Understanding of the world

  • The focus of the science curriculum is on developing an awareness of the world in which we live.
  • These areas will be explored with a hands-on approach. We do plan trips with the themes we are covering in that term.

Physical Education

  • The students will have a 35 minute class each week.
  • The students must wear sports clothes for the this class and girls might consider wearing pants or having a pair of shorts to wear under their uniform skirts or jumpers.

Toys

Bringing toys to school is discouraged because they distract the children from learning. If a toy is accidentally lost or broken, feelings will be hurt. Students may bring in books that are clearly marked with your child’s name.

Zzzzzzzz

  • Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest.
  • Setting and keeping a bedtime is a wonderful gift you can give to your child.

It will help them to be alert and ready to learn each day!
